Despite the last sighs of summer and the first whispers of autumn, I’m feeling surprisingly inspired and refreshed.
I’ve just returned from a trip to Berlin. Berlin isn’t just another city; it’s a living, breathing work of art. Everywhere you turn, there’s something that makes you stop and think—whether it’s the way they use art to keep history alive, how cyclists dominate the streets, or the fact that public transport actually works. I’m treating this time as my own personal New Year—a chance to reset, refocus, and step into September with a bit more intention and purpose.
One of the perks of stepping out of our daily routines is the perspective it gives us. Being in Berlin, away from my usual grind, gave me the space to see what’s working in my life, what’s broken, and what could do with a bit of a nudge. It reminded me that sometimes, we need to shake up our routines to really see what’s important. For me, that realisation hit home as I celebrated a milestone in my marriage—a reminder that the relationships and values we cherish deserve more than just the leftover energy at the end of the day. I hope my husband Donald is ready for more of my attention 😂
And now, with September upon us, I’m getting that old back-to-school feeling. Remember how, as children, a new school year meant a fresh start—new pencil case, fresh stationery, maybe even a fancy pen if you were really lucky? It was the simplest way of saying, “This year, I’m going to get it right.” Well, I’m channelling that vibe now. The excitement I’m feeling isn’t about making grand resolutions, but more about quietly redirecting my energy towards what truly matters to me.
One of the practices I’m particularly intrigued to start this month is something called “Morning Pages.” For the entire month of September, I’m committing to waking up at 5:30 AM each day to write three pages of whatever comes to mind. This practice, which hails from Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way, is designed to clear your mind, spark creativity, and help you focus on what’s actually important. Think of it like cracking open a pristine new notebook—full of potential and waiting for whatever might spill onto the pages. It’s a way to start the day with a bit more clarity, and I’m curious to see where it takes me.
So that’s my plan for September—how about you? What’s important to you? What matters, and how can you steer your energy towards it? Whether it’s through a new daily habit, a slight change in perspective, or just taking the time to pause and reflect, I hope this month brings you the clarity and inspiration you need to make the most of this fresh start.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year—here’s to embracing the quiet potential of September!
PS ….I have a brand new back to school notebook.
