Have you ever noticed how small, intentional steps can lead to something big? It’s like watching a baby grow—it can feel fast and painfully slow at the same time. One minute they’re crying, eating, sleeping, and… pooing. And before you know it, they’re smiling, holding their own head up, sitting up, crawling, and eventually walking—each milestone following a natural progression. This is exactly how morning yoga works too.
When we place our movements—both body and mind—in a thoughtful way, step by step, something incredible happens. Just like a baby’s growth, it doesn’t always feel like much in the moment, but over time, the transformation is undeniable. Each action, no matter how small, becomes a building block for growth.
Morning Yoga is Like Building Your Favourite Sandwich
Morning yoga is a practice of vinyasa krama, a Sanskrit phrase that means “to place in a special way.” It’s a method of moving mindfully, step by step, toward a greater purpose—whether it’s finding calm amidst chaos, building strength, or setting a positive tone for your day. Think of it like building the perfect sandwich: each layer (movement or breath) adds to the deliciousness of the whole thing.
The Power of a Morning Routine
Just like a baby’s early days, your morning yoga practice may not feel like much at first. You might stretch here, take a breath there, and think, “Am I even doing anything?” But over time, something shifts. Mornings that once felt sluggish and overwhelming become focused, calm, and full of intention. And just like how a baby slowly gains control over their body, your practice will eventually flow—without you even realising how it happened.
The beauty of a morning yoga practice is its simplicity. You don’t need to change your entire life overnight (I mean, who has the energy?). Instead, you place one small action—like waking up 30 minutes earlier to step onto your mat—in a special way. And just like that, you’ve created space for change. It’s a slow, steady process—like learning to crawl before you walk.
Why Small Steps Matter
Every small step, every gentle movement, every mindful breath leads into the next. It’s like watching a baby go from rolling over to sitting up to crawling to walking—each step is vital to the next. That’s why it’s so important to approach your morning practice with intention. Where do you want your day to go? How do you want to feel as you move through it?
When it all comes together, it feels like magic—but it’s not. It’s an art. And like any art, it requires practice. Morning yoga gives us the space to practice this art daily, to notice where we are, where we want to go, and how we want to get there. No, you don’t need to be Picasso, just a baby taking those first small steps toward something greater.
Start Your Journey
If you’ve been considering adding yoga to your mornings, remember this: it’s not about perfection or intensity (we’re not trying to walk on our hands just yet). It’s about showing up. It’s about taking that first small step, and then the next, with mindfulness and care. After all, yoga’s not about touching your toes; it’s about not judging yourself for not touching them… yet.
One day, you’ll wake up and realise that your mornings—and perhaps even your life—have shifted. Not through magic, but through the simple, powerful practice of placing each moment in a special way. So, why not start now? Just one small step. And see where it takes you. Preferably somewhere with coffee and a steady stream of milestones.
