Mornings Are Magical….Or Are They?
There’s something undeniably magical about the morning. The air feels still, like the world is holding its breath, and there’s a sense of possibility that anything could happen. But let’s be real for a second—starting a new habit, especially one that involves willingly getting out of a warm bed before the sun’s even up, can feel like an Olympic sport. Can I get a ‘nope’ from anyone who’s ever hit snooze on their alarm for the fifth time?
But yoga? Oh, yoga is absolutely worth the early rise.
When I first started teaching yoga in the morning, I was a bundle of nerves. I mean, who wouldn’t be? What if my body felt like it had been hit by a truck? (Spoiler: It did.) But I stuck with it, and here’s what I learned:
The Big Worries Every Beginner Has
- “I’m not flexible enough for yoga.” I hear this all the time, and I get it. I couldn’t touch my toes at first either—unless you count the desperate stretches I tried that only led to frustration and a pulled hamstring. Yoga is about creating flexibility, not having it all figured out from day one. So, relax. Your future self will thank you for starting now.
- “I’ll feel out of place.” Let’s be honest, sometimes walking into a new class feels like you’re the new kid at school, unsure of the rules. But yoga? It’s the opposite of that. It’s personal. It’s your mat, your breath, your practice. No one’s watching or judging. And if anyone is, it’s probably because they’re too busy trying to touch their toes, too.
- “What if I don’t stick with it?” Here’s the truth: some people start yoga and don’t stick with it. And that’s okay. Good habits aren’t formed overnight. Yoga is not a magical fix that’s going to change your life in one class (as much as we wish it would). Habits take time, consistency, and effort. Yoga, like any good habit, is a continual act of will. Some days you’ll feel like a yoga goddess. Other days? Well, there are days when the mat feels like a big pile of meh, and that’s normal. The key is showing up anyway, making that small effort, even when you’re not feeling it. You have to build the habit through action and perseverance, until one day it feels like second nature. So, if you miss a class, don’t beat yourself up. Just keep going.
What You’ll Love About Morning Yoga
Starting the day with yoga is like setting your mind and body on ‘good vibes only.’ It’s your little head start in the race to not lose your cool by 9 a.m. The gentle stretches loosen up your body, calm your mind, and make the idea of facing the world a little less terrifying. Trust me, you’ll be amazed at how much more focused and just generally better you feel throughout the day.
In our beginner-friendly classes (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, bright and early, from the comfort of your own home!), we keep it simple and supportive. Yoga isn’t about complicated sequences or poses; it’s about meeting yourself where you are. Some days, that means flowing or flailing through sun salutations, other days, it’s just about breathing deeply and letting the tension melt away. And that’s perfectly fine.
My Tip for Starting Out
Here’s my golden nugget of wisdom: Don’t overthink it. Seriously, don’t. Roll out your mat (or a towel if that’s what you’ve got), and give yourself permission to just show up. You don’t need to be perfect—you just need to begin. After all, the hardest part of yoga is simply making it to the mat. Everything else is just a bonus.
