There’s a question my friend Liz asked me recently that wouldn’t go away: “What’s your favourite part of any normal day?” It’s a simple question and I was suprised by how long it took me to come up with an answer. The question really made me think about how the quiet moments in each day shape my daily rhythm.
One of the lovely rituals woven into my routine is the daily voice texts Liz and I exchange. It started during lockdown and has become a thread running through our days ever since. Sometimes I send my message during a morning walk, often I pace around local halls before I teach, other times I find a moment late in the day to send a quick hello or a longer ramble. The timing and length shift with life’s flow, but these exchanges hold a comforting space—a point of connection that feels both spontaneous and steady.
Reflecting on Liz’s question, I find that my favourite parts of the day are a collection of moments rather than any single one. My boiling hot, awakening shower; morning meditation on the corner of my sofa followed by Wordle & Connections; the focused preparation and teaching of my morning yoga class; and my own mindful practice that helps me feel centred and aligned. These pieces fit together, creating a routine that grounds me, nurtures calm, and fills me with energy to meet whatever the day holds.
Our routines aren’t about perfection or strict order—they are living mosaics made of the moments that nourish us. The voice texts with Liz are a gentle thread within this tapestry, an essential part of the whole, reminding me that connection, however it comes, enriches the day.
Maybe your favourite part of the day is different, or maybe it’s still waiting to be noticed. Liz’s question invites a moment of pause—to appreciate the small rituals that bring you comfort, clarity, or joy. These moments form the foundation of a routine that supports your whole being, helping you to feel rooted in whatever each day brings.
